Assistant Professor of Innovation, Technology & Organizing

Your function

We seek to further strengthen our internationally recognized research and teaching on the organizing of innovation processes. Therefore, we are looking for internationally oriented, ambitious, and collegial scholars who share our passion for innovation, organizing, and (digital) technology. We are specifically seeking candidates with strong research potential, demonstrated through high-quality publications and a promising pipeline of studies aimed at leading international journals.

For this opening, we look for someone with the ambition to conduct high-quality research and teaching focusing on the collaborative aspects of technology and innovation, within and between organizations. Topics may include, for instance, the use of digital technology in innovation processes, the development of innovation ecosystems, (digital) platforms and infrastructures for innovation and experimentation, the use of AI in innovation processes, innovating with and for the natural environment, and organizing for system transformation. You are expected to engage with businesses and other societal stakeholders, in line with the School’s societal impact strategy. 

Your duties

  • Initiating, conducting, and supervising high-quality research
  • Publishing in leading international journals and developing a strong record in external grant acquisition
  • Teaching and coordinating courses in the BSc and MSc programs of the School of Business and Economics.
  • Contributing to the KIN Center for Digital Innovation through executive education, outreach, and collaborating with business and societal stakeholders
  • Contributing to the Department and School through service and, eventually, committee work
  • Being committed to obtaining a university teaching qualification or possessing one already.

Your profile

  • A PhD in business administration, organization studies, innovation studies, industrial design or engineering, information systems, or a related social science discipline
  • Strong qualitative and/or quantitative methodological skills
  • A developing track record of high-quality publications and a promising pipeline of papers aimed at leading journals in organization and innovation studies
  • An ambitious research agenda related to themes such as the organization of technological innovation (including but not limited to digital technology), interorganizational collaboration and ecosystems, data and infrastructures, sustainable and responsible innovation, and societal grand challenges.
  • Experience in, and passion for, teaching in bachelor’s and master’s programs
  • Interest in collaboration with industry partners and societal impact; experience with executive teaching is a plus.
  • Fluency in English; command of Dutch language is a plus.

  • a salary of minimum € 4.728,00 (Scale 11) and maximum € 7.297,00 (Scale 12) gross per month, on a full-time basis. The exact salary depends on your education and experience.
  • a position for at least 0.8 fte. Your employment contract will initially last 18 months. This can be converted into a permanent contract depending on performance in light of criteria formulated at the start of the contract. Candidates should be willing to acquire a basic qualification in teaching as demanded by Dutch universities (if they do not already have one)

  • A full-time 38-hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 232 hours per year. If you choose to work 40 hours, you have 96 extra holiday leave hours on an annual basis. For part-timers, this is calculated pro rata.

KIN Center for Digital Innovation (KIN) (https://vu.nl/en/about-vu/research-institutes/kin-center-for-digital-innovation) is one of the departments of the School of Business and Economics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. KIN researchers study the development, use, and business value of innovative organizational processes and technologies. Our research contributes to international scholarly fields that are multi-disciplinary. We collaborate closely with faculty and researchers from other universities and cooperate with an extensive network of business partners. The KIN department is also responsible for several courses in the Business Administration curriculum at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and coordinates the Master Digital Business and Innovation. Researchers at KIN regularly publish and hold editorial positions in leading journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, or Management Information Systems Quarterly. In recent years, PhD candidates of KIN were hired as assistant professors at leading European business schools (e.g., University of Cambridge, Stockholm School of Economics, Copenhagen Business School, Warwick Business School, Rotterdam School of Management).
