The Archaeology section of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is seeking to hire a junior lecturer to teach in its joint Bachelor's program in Archaeology offered through ACASA (Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology) which is a collaborative initiative between the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam. While the teaching duties will include general archaeological topics, we are specifically looking for a candidate with a specialization in Northwest European and/or Roman archaeology.

Within ACASA, the Archaeology section offers international programs with both English and Dutch tracks, with English serving as the language of instruction in all cases. One of ACASA's key strengths is its inter- and multidisciplinary approach to the past. As a result, you will frequently (though not always) co-teach courses alongside colleagues from different specializations. In collaboration with your colleagues, you will also contribute to the development and improvement of courses, as well as to ongoing reflections on the program’s structure and learning pathways. In addition to teaching, you will (co-)supervise BA theses and take on administrative and managerial duties, such as participating in team meetings and serving on the education or examination committee. The position consists of 90% teaching and 10% administrative and management responsibilities.

Jouw profiel

Suitable candidates meet the following requirements:

  • you have an MA or PhD in Archaeology
  • you specialize in Northwestern Europe, preferably in the Roman period
  • you are enthusiastic and skilled in academic teaching, as is clear from  teaching evaluations
  • you are in possession of the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO), or are willing to obtain this within the foreseeable future
  • you have some experience in (co-)supervising bachelor's theses
  • you are a team player and are willing to contribute to activities of the Archaeology section and of ACASA.
  • you have an excellent command of Dutch and English enabling you to teach and communicate in English

    Wat bieden wij

    We offer a temporary appointment of 0,5 fte for 2 years with option of extension and with a probationary period of 1 year. The appointment will begin on June 1st, 2025 (or slightly later, if necessary), allowing time to prepare for the first courses, which start in early September 2025. Please note that basic teaching materials are already available for all courses you will be teaching.

    The salary, depending on education and experience, amounts to a minimum of € 3.378 and a maximum of € 4.227 gross per month on a full-time basis.

    We also offer you attractive fringe benefits and regulations. Some examples:

    • a full-time 38-hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 232 hours per year. For part-timers, this is calculated pro rata.
    • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
    • solid pension scheme (ABP)
    • contribution to commuting expenses
    • optional model for designing a personalized benefits package

    The new Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities aspires to be the intellectual and philosophical core of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
