Postdoc/Lecturer International Security

The position combines research as a postdoc (0,4 fte) with teaching as a lecturer (up to an additional 0,6 fte). This postdoc position is part of the project “Armed Forces and Society. Dutch Public Opinion on the Military and Defence in Comparative Perspective”. The overall objective of the project is to gain a deeper understanding of what citizens think about the military and security and defence policy and thus to better understand the societal context of the current transformation of the military and the policies on security and defence. The project is carried out in collaboration with prof. dr. Michal Onderco at Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, prof. dr. Lonneke Peperkamp and dr. Tine Molendijk at Dutch Defense Academy as well as prof. dr. Ainė Ramonaite (Vilnius University, Lithuania). You can find more information on the project here.

The postdoc position is combined with the position of a lecturer, teaching courses and supervising theses on international security.

The position is funded for a period of two years, preferably starting on 1 June 2025.

Your duties

  • design and carry out a representative survey in the Netherlands, Germany, and Lithuania about citizens attitudes towards the military and their own role in defence
  • organize focus groups amongst students and active military service personnel      
  • organize outreach with societal partners
  • contribute to joint publications on the findings of the project
  • teach courses on international security, preferably in English and Dutch
  • supervise (Bachelor and Master?) theses on international security

Jouw profiel

  • PhD in Political Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, International Relations or a closely related field
  • advanced quantitative research skills and preferably experience with survey data
  • a proven track record in publishing in high-quality international refereed journals
  • willingness to work in a team
  • excellent teaching evaluations
  • excellent English language skills and preferably working knowledge of Dutch

  • a salary of minimum € 4.537,00 (Scale 11) and maximum € 6.209,00 (Scale 11) gross per month, on a full-time basis. This is based on UFO profile Teacher 3, Researcher 3. The exact salary depends on your education and experience.
  • a position for at least 0.6 FTE. Your employment contract will initially last 1 year. Afterwards, the possibility of expansion exists.

  • A full-time 38-hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 232 hours per year. If you choose to work 40 hours, you have 96 extra holiday leave hours on an annual basis. For part-timers, this is calculated pro rata.

  • optional model for designing a personalized benefits package
  • contribution to commuting expenses
